Overview
Rara Lake, alternatively known as Mahendra Tal is the biggest and deepest freshwater lake in districts. It was declared as a Ramsar site in September 2007. Rara Lake lies at an altitude of 2,990 m (9,810 ft.) above sea level which has a water surface of 10.8 km2 (4.2 sq. mi) with a maximum of the Himalayas of Nepal. Rara Lake is located in Rara national park in Jumla and Mugu depth of 167 m (548 ft.). Rara Lake is 5.1 km (3.2 mi) long and 2.7 km (1.7 mi) wide. Rara national park is a protected area in the Himalayas of Nepal which was established in 1976. Rara national park covers an area of 106 km2 (41 sq. mi) in the Mugu and Jumla districts of Nepal. It is the smallest national park in Nepal. The park was established with a motive to protect the unique flora and fauna of the Humla-Jumla district. The serenity of the Rara Lake is undefinable making it one of the most amazing lakes in Nepal. The dazzling beauty of Rara Lake has been able to attract a lot of tourists in the present day in Nepal. People from all over the world climb all the way up to admire the pristine lake. Rara national park is the smallest national park in Nepal as mentioned earlier while Rara Lake is the biggest lake in Nepal. Chuchemara Hill lying at 4,087 m is the best point to enjoy magnificent views of the deep blue lake, the forested hillsides, and the snowcapped peaks. A variety of birds can be seen while trekking on the way to Rara according to seasons.
