The Kanchenjunga Trek is a stunning and remote trekking adventure in eastern Nepal that leads you through some of the most unspoiled landscapes in the Himalayas. Named after Mount Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak in the world (8,586m), this trek offers breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, alpine forests, and deep valleys. The route passes through traditional villages inhabited by Limbu, Rai, and Tibetan communities, providing rich cultural insights alongside natural beauty. The trek can be tailored to reach either the North Base Camp (Pangpema), the South Base Camp (Oktang), or both as part of a circuit. With fewer trekkers on the trail, the Kanchenjunga trek is perfect for those seeking solitude, adventure, and a truly immersive Himalayan experience.
Our representative will meet you at the arrival gate with a signboard for Mandala Holidays. Then you will be escorted to your hotel. The rest of the day can be spent at leisure and in the evening, our company representatives will visit you for the final briefing of the trek.
Today begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, located in the eastern lowlands of Nepal. Upon arrival, you will embark on a picturesque drive through the hills and valleys of eastern Nepal, gradually ascending toward Taplejung, the gateway to the Kanchenjunga region. The drive takes approximately 8–9 hours, offering views of lush tea gardens, terraced fields, and traditional villages along the way. Once in Taplejung, you will check in to your accommodation and prepare for the trekking adventure ahead.
After breakfast, you will continue your journey with a scenic drive from Taplejung to Sekathum, the starting point of the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek. The drive takes about 6–7 hours and winds through beautiful landscapes, including rolling hills, remote settlements, terraced fields, and forested valleys. As you approach Sekathum, you will notice the terrain becoming more rugged and mountainous. Upon arrival, settle into your teahouse and enjoy the peaceful riverside setting, ready to begin your trekking adventure the following day.
Today marks the beginning of your trek on foot as you leave Sekathum and head toward Amjilosa. The trail follows the Ghunsa Khola, crossing several suspension bridges and meandering through dense forests, narrow ridges, and picturesque riverbanks. Though the distance isn’t long, the trail is steep and challenging in sections, making it a moderately demanding day. As you ascend, you will pass through a few scattered settlements and witness the transition into more remote, alpine terrain. After about 5–6 hours of trekking, you will reach the small village of Amjilosa, where you will spend the night in a cozy teahouse.
Today’s trek takes you deeper into the remote valleys of the Kanchenjunga region as you journey from Amjilosa to Gyabla. The trail gradually ascends through beautiful rhododendron, bamboo, and pine forests, offering occasional glimpses of cascading waterfalls and rugged mountain scenery. You will pass through serene landscapes, where the sounds of the Ghunsa Khola accompany your walk. The hike is moderately challenging and takes about 4–5 hours, with a mix of uphill climbs and flat stretches. Gyabla, a small and picturesque settlement inhabited by Tibetan-influenced communities, welcomes you with its peaceful atmosphere and traditional stone houses. Overnight stay in Gyabla.
Today’s journey takes you from the quiet village of Gyabla to the larger and culturally rich settlement of Ghunsa. The trail follows the scenic Ghunsa Khola River, winding through lush forests of pine and rhododendron. Along the way, you wll pass traditional stone huts, small yak pastures, and perhaps encounter herders or locals going about their daily lives. After about 5–6 hours of trekking, you will arrive in Ghunsa, a charming Sherpa village at an elevation of around 3,475 meters. Known for its warm hospitality, mani walls, and prayer flags fluttering in the mountain breeze, Ghunsa offers a peaceful resting point with basic lodges and a small monastery to explore. This marks your entry into higher altitudes, so it’s an ideal place to rest and begin the acclimatization process.
Today is set aside for acclimatization to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude. Ghunsa, situated at around 3,475 meters, provides a perfect environment for a rest day with scenic beauty and cultural richness. To aid the acclimatization process, you can take a short hike to the nearby ridges or towards the Lapsang La trail, which offers breathtaking views of surrounding peaks such as Jannu (Kumbhakarna). This active rest helps in adapting to the thinner air while avoiding altitude sickness. You will also have time to explore the village, visit the local monastery, and interact with the friendly Sherpa community to learn more about their high-mountain lifestyle. Rest well in preparation for the more challenging days ahead on the Kanchanjunga Circuit.
After breakfast, begin your trek from Ghunsa heading toward Khambachen (approx. 4,050 meters), a journey that takes around 5–6 hours. The trail gradually ascends through beautiful pine and rhododendron forests along the Ghunsa Khola River. As you gain altitude, the landscape opens up with impressive views of snow-capped peaks including Jannu (7,710m). You will pass several mani walls and chortens, reflecting the strong Buddhist influence in the region. The trail can be rocky and exposed in places, so careful footing is essential. Upon reaching Khambachen, a stunning glacial valley nestled beneath towering mountains, you will settle in for the night and enjoy the serene surroundings in preparation for the higher elevations ahead.
Today’s trek takes you from Khambachen to Lhonak (approx. 4,780 meters), gaining significant altitude as you move deeper into the high Himalayas. The trail is rugged and winds through rocky terrain, with occasional landslide-prone areas requiring cautious steps. As you ascend, the tree line disappears, and vast alpine landscapes unfold, offering awe-inspiring views of towering peaks like Kirat Chuli and the impressive north face of Kangchenjunga. The final stretch follows the glacier moraine, leading you to the remote settlement of Lhonak, nestled near the Kanchenjunga Glacier. Expect a 5–6 hour walk, and be mindful of the altitude. Upon arrival, rest and prepare for the next day’s hike to Pangpema, the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp.
Today is a highlight of the trek as you hike to the North Kanchenjunga Base Camp, also known as Pangpema (5,143 meters). The trail follows the Kanchenjunga Glacier, gradually gaining altitude as you pass through dramatic high alpine terrain with striking views of towering peaks and glacial formations. After about 3–4 hours of steady ascent, you will reach Pangpema, a spectacular vantage point offering breathtaking views of Mt. Kanchenjunga—the world’s third highest mountain—and its surrounding giants. After spending some time soaking in the views and capturing photos, you will retrace your steps back to Lhonak. The return trip brings the total hiking time to around 6–7 hours. Overnight stay in Lhonak.
After an early breakfast, you begin your descent from Lhonak, retracing the trail along the Ghunsa Khola. The return journey offers a different perspective of the dramatic landscapes you passed on the way up—glacial moraines, rugged cliffs, and snow-capped peaks. You will pass through Khambachen and continue trekking through alpine meadows and rhododendron forests until you reach the welcoming village of Ghunsa. The trek takes approximately 6–7 hours, allowing for a more relaxed pace. Overnight stay in Ghunsa.
Today, you will continue your journey deeper into the remote wilderness as you trek from Ghunsa to Sele La Base Camp (South). The trail gradually ascends through beautiful forests and open alpine meadows, offering stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Along the way, you may spot diverse flora and fauna unique to this high-altitude region. The trek to Sele La Base Camp typically takes around 5–6 hours. Once you arrive, you can enjoy the peaceful mountain environment and prepare for the challenging pass crossing ahead. Overnight stay at Sele La Base Camp.
On Day 13, you will begin by crossing the challenging Sele La Pass, one of the highest points on the Kanchenjunga Circuit, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. After descending from the pass, the trail leads you through pristine rhododendron forests and alpine landscapes as you make your way to the village of Tseram. This peaceful settlement provides a perfect spot to rest and experience the local culture before continuing your trek. The day’s journey usually takes around 6–7 hours depending on pace and weather conditions. Overnight stay in Tseram.
Today’s trek takes you from Tseram to Ramche, a scenic journey through serene alpine meadows and rugged mountain terrain. After reaching Ramche, you will embark on a rewarding hike to Oktang, situated at 4,740 meters, which offers spectacular views of Yalung South Base Camp and the surrounding majestic peaks of Kanchenjunga. After soaking in the breathtaking panorama and capturing memorable photos, you will descend back to Tseram for an overnight stay, reflecting on a day filled with stunning natural beauty and high-altitude adventure.
On Day 15, you will continue your journey by trekking from Tseram to Tortong. The trail takes you through beautiful forests and traditional villages, offering peaceful surroundings and glimpses of local life. As you ascend or descend along the route, you will enjoy panoramic views of the towering Kanchenjunga massif and pristine natural landscapes. Upon arrival in Tortong, you can relax and prepare for the next stage of your trek in this tranquil mountain setting.
On Day 16, you will trek from Tortong to Yamphudin, continuing your exploration of the Kanchenjunga region. The trail takes you through lush rhododendron forests and traditional Limbu villages, where you can experience the warm hospitality of the local people. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of snow-capped peaks and the diverse flora and fauna of this remote Himalayan area. After several hours of trekking, you will reach Yamphudin, a peaceful village where you can rest and soak in the serene mountain atmosphere.
On Day 17, you will leave the trekking trails behind and embark on a scenic drive from Yamphudin to Illam. This journey takes you through the beautiful landscapes of eastern Nepal, featuring rolling tea gardens, lush hills, and picturesque rural villages. Illam is famous for its tea estates and pleasant climate, offering a refreshing change after days of trekking. Upon arrival, you can explore the town, visit tea gardens, and enjoy the tranquil environment before concluding this leg of your adventure.
On Day 18, you will drive from Illam to Bhadrapur, enjoying the scenic route through the eastern hills of Nepal. The drive offers beautiful views of tea gardens, forests, and rural landscapes. Upon reaching Bhadrapur airport, you will catch your flight back to Kathmandu, concluding your memorable journey. Once in Kathmandu, you can relax or prepare for your onward travel.
It's your last day in Nepal! Grab some breakfast, and then take in some last-minute shopping in Kathmandu. We will make sure you arrive at Kathmandu International Airport with plenty time before your flight home. At this time, we will say our goodbyes and bid you farewell, armed with warm memories and gorgeous photos to show your loved ones.
