Overview

Established in 2002, Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park stands as Nepal's ninth national park. Nestled in the mid-hills on the northern outskirts of the Kathmandu Valley, the park derives its name from the majestic Shivapuri Peak, reaching an altitude of 2,732 meters (8,963 feet). As the closest national park to the capital city, Shivapuri National Park offers a unique tour experience, providing breathtaking mountain vistas and glimpses of untamed wildlife. This excursion presents an opportunity to spot an array of bird species, including eight types of storks, egrets, woodpeckers, black-headed shrikes, six pheasant species, 17 cuckoo species, and three crow species. The prime period for this bird-watching adventure is March to December.

Trip Highlights

    • Home to an estimated 318 species of birds, Shivapuri National Park, coupled with Phulchowki, which boasts over 300 bird species, forms a birdwatcher's paradise.
    • Explore renowned bird-watching sites like Phulchowki, Nagarjun Dada, Shivapuri watershed, and Godavari, where enthusiasts can spot raptors such as Spring Babblers, Curlews, Rufous-Bellied Pied Woodpeckers, Black-Throated Parrotbills, Eurasian Jays, and more.
    • The Kathmandu Valley itself is a haven for birdwatchers, with sightings of the Hoary-Throated Barwing, Great Barbet, Hill Partridge, and Mountain Scops, contributing to the valley's diverse avian population.
