Mardi Himal Trek: The new jewel of Annapurna

Mardi Himal Trek: The new jewel of Annapurna

When someone says 'trekking in Nepal,' the first thing that comes to mind is either Everest or Annapurna. And among those trails lies the Mardi Himal Trek, the new jewel of the Annapurna region. This trail is quieter and provides adventure, breathtaking views, and takes us closer to nature. This was my first trek ever, and it sparked my love for the mountains, particularly Mt. Machhapuchhre.  The journey starts with the drive from Pokhara to Kande, and from there you will continue your walk for the next 4-5 days.

  • Why Mardi Himal Trek?

The Mardi Himal Trek is often described as the “off-the-beaten-path” experience in the Annapurna region. Until a few years ago, it was relatively unknown, with only shepherds and a few trekkers venturing here. Today, it has gained popularity but still maintains its quiet charm compared to other crowded routes.

The journey begins with lush forests where you might hear birds and see colorful rhododendrons in bloom (especially in spring). As you climb higher, the scenery transforms into alpine meadows and rugged ridgelines, offering uninterrupted mountain views. Reaching the Mardi Himal Viewpoint (4,200 m) and pushing further to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m) is truly rewarding. Standing face-to-face with the mighty Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) is a memory etched forever. If you are looking for a moderate trek with fewer crowds, rich culture, and majestic Himalayan views, Mardi Himal is an excellent choice.

  • Best Season

Spring (March–May): The forests are alive with rhododendron blossoms, making the trek especially colorful.

Autumn (September–November): Crystal-clear skies, perfect temperatures, and the best chance for unobstructed mountain views.

While winter (Dec–Feb) offers snow and a serene landscape, it can get very cold at higher altitudes. Monsoon (Jun–Aug) makes the trail slippery with leeches, but the greenery is incredibly lush.

  • Trek Duration and Difficulty

The trek usually takes 5-7 days, depending upon your walking pace and the route you take.

The maximum altitude gain for this trek is 4,500 m, so it is usually considered a moderate trek. The trail involves forested ascents, ridge walks, and gradual climbs. It doesn’t require technical climbing skills, but good physical fitness and some prior trekking experience will make the journey more comfortable.

  • Teahouse and local experiences.

The Mardi Himal route has charming teahouses that provide meals and simple accommodation. Expect cozy dining rooms warmed by wood stoves, home-cooked Dal Bhat, and conversations with fellow trekkers. The hospitality of the locals, mostly Gurung communities, adds warmth to the journey. Since the trail is less commercialized, facilities are more basic compared to Annapurna Base Camp, but that’s part of the beauty you feel closer to nature and local life.

  • Trek essentials (About permit and Guide)

ACAP(Annapurna Conservation Area Permit)

TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System Card)

As per government regulations, trekking with a registered guide is now mandatory. A guide not only ensures safety but also shares local cultures, helps with teahouse arrangements, and enriches your overall experience.

The Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek is a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and tranquility. It is short enough to fit into a week, yet rewarding enough to rival longer treks in the region. If you dream of walking through quiet trails, gazing at towering peaks, and experiencing the Himalayas away from the crowds, Mardi Himal is calling you.
