The trail to the Mother Goddess of Helambu- Ama Yangri Peak

The trail to the Mother Goddess of Helambu- Ama Yangri Peak

  • Overview

The Ama Yangri Peak, located in Sindupalchowk District, is a 2-3 day trekking destination holding cultural significance for the Tamang and Sherpa Communities. You can reach this place with a 6-hour drive from Kathmandu to Tarkyeghyang via Melamchi. The Ama Yangri peak is at an elevation of 3,771 m, and is quite popular for its breathtaking view of Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lhakpa, Gaurishankar, and, on clear days, if you are lucky, then you’ll be able to witness Mt. Everest, Annapurna Range, and Manaslu Range. The people of Helambu pay respect to this peak since it holds cultural significance to them and often refer to it as the mother goddess of Helambu. The peak is filled with prayer flags, so take a moment to enjoy the cold wind and flags fluttering against it.

  • How to get there?

You can get a bus departing at exactly 6 am from Jorpati, which will take you from Sankhu to Melamchi to Timbu to Takeghyang. If you took a private vehicle, then you can reach up to Ama Yangri Base Camp, but we do not recommend you to drive to the base camp since the road is in the worst condition possible. During winter, the road becomes frozen because of snowfall, and during monsoon, it's quite slippery due to rain, so it's best to leave your vehicle in Tarkeghyang. The road condition is not that good since it passes through various landslide-prone areas and passes through Melamchi, which was highly affected by the flood in 2021. You can still see the houses that were swept away and destroyed by the flood. It was really difficult for us to pass through that area since none of us took that road after the devastating flood. I still remember the beautiful bazaar and how lively that area was in 2019. But now it was filled with the hopeless dreams of locals.

Then you can have your lunch at Tarkeghyang and start walking to Base Camp. It will take you around 2-3 hours to reach base camp. By the time we started to walk, it was already 5 PM. So we rushed quickly to reach base camp. Halfway to the Base Camp, the sun was setting, so we decided to take a moment to enjoy the sunset. We knew we were late, but we just couldn’t let ourselves miss the sunset. The sky was turning golden, the clouds were pink. The sky showed us so many colors that day, and we prayed to god to give us clear weather the next morning. By the time we reached Base Camp, it was almost 8 pm. We rushed ourselves so much on the way, thinking the hotel staff might cancel our booking and give it to the next people.

  • When should you visit Ama Yangri?

The clear answer to this question is throughout the year. During the monsoon, the peak appears greener, and the surrounding mountains look magical, playing hide-and-seek with the clouds. However, if it gets cloudy, you might miss the view. In spring and autumn, the sunrise is enchanting, accompanied by clear weather and a view of the Himalayas surrounding you. During winter, the peak is blanketed in snow, and what could be more magical than snowy peaks surrounding you? Therefore, visit this place whenever you can.

  • How are the Meals and Accommodation there?

This area has recently started attracting visitors, so the hotels available there are pretty basic with basic facilities. Tarkeghyang offers some decent hotels with attached bathrooms and Wi-Fi, but the Base Camp has only two hotels, with most rooms being in temporary tents with heaters. Meals typically include standard Dal Bhat, or you can choose from their menu, which doesn't offer many options, so you may need to accept what’s available. Make sure to book your accommodation early, as weekends tend to be busy. During winter, the Base Camp hotel offers warm food and rooms to keep you comfortable.

  • What are the costs & Expenses for this trip?

This trek is a short and cheap trek that falls under the Langtang Region. Since it can be completed in 2-3 days, the price is not that high. So, this trek can be completed under a budget of 5,000-10,000 (For Nepalese) and USD 200-300 (for Foreigners), but it may vary upon how you travel and what kind of meals and accommodation you choose.

  • What is the difficulty level of this trek?

It's not that hard of a trek, but you have significant elevation gain from base camp to the peak. After completing around 50% of the trail, it's straight uphill to reach the peak, and gradually, the tree line will come to an end. So, if you take things too fast, you might get a slight headache. So, drink plenty of water and have some snacks or a protein bar, so that you’ll stay strong throughout the trek.
